DSC-B305-04 Introduction to Management Sciences and Production Systems

3 credit hours.

Prerequisite: MT 132, ISM 200, or DSC-B207.

Textbook: Winston, W.L. and S.C. Albright, Practical Management Science: Spreadsheet Modeling and Applications, Duxbury Press, 1997.

Objectives:

(1) To acquaint the student with the overall operations research / management science process;
(2) To expose the student to several of the most widely utilized OR/MS and production planning models, along with solution techniques;
(3) To familiarize the student with the use of related computer programs, particularly Microsoft Excel, to facilitate the process.
Applications related to production management are emphasized.

Assignments:

Each student will be assigned weekly written and/or computer homework assignments, due the following class period. Homework assignments will not be accepted late. Homework assignments are expected to be legible as well as labeled with your name and the date. Those not meeting these expectations will be reduced in value.

Attendance Policy:

Excessive absences will result in a lowered grade.

Examinations:

Examinations will emphasize problem solving, and have content from the textbook and lectures.
Midterm Exam: Thursday, October 15, 12:45 – 2:00 p.m.
Final Exam: Tuesday, December 8, 12:00 – 1:50 p.m.

Grading:

A student’s final grade depends upon:
30% Written and computer assignments;
30% Midterm exam; and
40% Final exam.

90-100%	A
